You may be skeptical about the existence of a parallel universe like Whu’s home world on Celestica. It’s hard to prove such a parallel universe exists, but many cosmologists (scientists who study the structure and evolution of the universe) are actively investigating the possibilities.
A recent article in the NY Times, Big Brain Theory: Have Cosmologists Lost Theirs, describes some of the new work. The article talks about “the growing stream of debate and dueling papers” and “multiple universes.” The cosmologists “speak with apparent aplomb about gazillions of parallel universes.” The apparent contradictions are called the Boltzmann Brain Problem, after an Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann who first raised the possibilities of fluctuations in the universe back in the 19th century.
It seems that Whu’s world is all too possible.
